Blogger’s Notebook

cable360.net

Odds and ends to conclude the year and look ahead to 2010.

Holiday Gifts: General kudos to cable’s programmers this month. It’s usually a hit or miss situation when it comes to receiving preview tapes from networks prior to the January TV critics tour. With TCA arriving so close to the holidays, it’s understandable that the task of distributing preview tapes to critics of next year’s shows sometimes slips. Not this year.

TNT sent out the critically acclaimed police series Southland weeks ago. Just the other day Investigation Discovery delivered its Valentine’s Day special, Prison Wives. Earlier, HBO, which is always reliable in terms of sending screeners, posted us parts of its much anticipated Hanks-Spielberg 10-night mini The Pacific.

So, how were the tapes we received?

Before that let’s look at the schedule. Remember Southland is a series that Turner Entertainment chief Steve Koonin grabbed for TNT after its cancellation by NBC. Beginning Jan 12 at 10pm, TNT plans to present 13 eps of Southland, including 7 that aired previously on NBC; the new eps will commence on TNT March 2.

The eps TNT sent us recently included an extended pilot—there is some 6 minutes of material here that NBC deleted when the pilot debuted originally. Even better, TNT will show this longer pilot commercial free on Jan 12.

OK, so how’s the quality of Southland? Koonin, one of cable’s most pleasant execs, can keep smiling. The critics weren’t wrong about Southland. It’s a gritty police drama based in Los Angeles and it’s largely believable. Much of the pilot’s time is spent with rank-and-file officers Cooper (Michael Cudlitz), a hard-nosed veteran, and Sherman (Ben McKenzie), a green rookie who’s assigned to train with Cooper. While Cooper and Sherman’s adventures largely are predictable and the other characters are more traditional than TNT’s original police dramas The Closer and Saving Grace, Southland is solid. The larger question will be whether TNT orders new episodes after this season. Should it do so, will Southland retain its broadcast network (read more expensive than cable) look and feel?

Interestingly The Pacific reminds me of how good the concept of another series was. History’s WWII in HD, which premiered in November, really was a misnomer. Yes, the digitized and colorized footage was impressive, but the real stars of that fine series were the men and women who told their WWII stories. After introducing their stories, they gave way to actors who voiced their words. Eventually their narratives were woven into History’s telling of the war.

Oil hangs below US$79 in Asia after surge

etaiwannews.com
AP

Oil prices hung below US$79 a barrel yesterday in Asia, giving back some gains as Asian stock markets mostly fell and the U.S. dollar strengthened moderately.

Benchmark crude for February delivery was down US$0.11 to US$78.66 a barrel at midday in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. =The contract settled up US$0.72 at US$78.77 on Monday after surging above US$79 as an extended cold snap in the U.S. triggered an end-of-year rally in energy futures.

Futures contracts for oil, natural gas and heating oil have all become more expensive this month as snow storms blanketed parts of the U.S. and a sharp drop in supplies of crude and other fuels surprised traders.Analysts say oil could rise above US$80 before the end of the year if U.S. inventories figures show a drop in stockpiles, which would suggest improving demand in the world's largest economy.

Microsoft Wants Bing to Become Big Chinese Player

microsoft-watch.com

Microsoft seems determined to seize the large-and-growing Chinese search-engine market, according to a statement circulating online.

"Microsoft is committed to the China market and the search market in China is the most important strategic market for Microsoft," the company told Reuters on Dec. 29. "We specifically set the search technology center in China to get a deeper understanding of what Chinese users need, to be able to deliver the best product to them."

But as T.S. Eliot might have said, there's a substantial shadow between the concept and the reality. And in the reality, Microsoft has a long, steep road ahead if it wants to catch up to the reigning players in the China space.

According to research firm Analysys International, as cited by Reuters, Chinese search engine Baidu currently leads the country's search-engine market with 63.9 percent, followed by Google with 31.3 percent. Meanwhile, another research firm estimated Bing (which launched in China in June, and is still technically in beta) as occupying less than 1 percent of the Chinese search-engine market in the second quarter of 2009.

Within the U.S., Bing currently owns less than 10 percent of the market (depending on which research firm's data you use; Experian Hitwise plugged it at 9.57 percent for October, while ComScore said 9.9 percent), while Google dominates at around 65 percent and Yahoo somewhere in the 18 percent range. The big hope among Redmond's executives, most likely, is that the finalization of the Microsoft-Yahoo search-and-advertising deal will not only result in Bing seizing Yahoo's search engine market-share with little to no attrition (under the terms of the deal, Bing will power search on Yahoo's sites) but that the extra flood of data from Yahoo customers will allow Microsoft's engineers to refine Bing into a more robust Google competitor.

Microsoft, Yahoo help keep India away from porn?

news.cnet.com

Birds do it. Bees do it. It's just that these days in India it may be a little harder to watch online images of human beings doing it.

Sex is often a slightly thorny subject (well, maybe except in France). However, varying attitudes around the world to varying sexual practices mean search engines must adjust their positions accordingly.

So it may sadden some to hear of a Guardian special investigation that appears to have unearthed evidence of Microsoft and Yahoo search engines complying with a new Indian law offering severe punishment for the display of "lascivious" content.

I know one man's lascivious is another man's oblivious. But this law, based on a 150-year-old statute (section 292, if you have your Indian penal code tucked about your person) specifically targets access to obscenity.

McAfee: Cybercriminals will attack Adobe more than Microsoft

blog.seattlepi.com

Computer security leader McAfee is predicting that, in 2010, cybercriminals will attack Adobe products more than those from the perennial big target, Microsoft.

In 2009, as attacks on client software increased, cybercriminals' favorite products were Adobe Flash and Acrobat Reader, according to a report (PDF) released Tuesday by McAfee Labs. Attackers can exploit vulnerabilities in Flash applications via the Web and Acrobat documents via e-mail attachments.

"Based on the current trends," the McAfee report states, "we expect that in 2010 Adobe product exploitation is likely to surpass that of Microsoft Office applications in the number of desktop PCs being attacked."

Meanwhile, 2009 marked a possible turning point in the fight against cybercrime, McAfee said. Law enforcement continues to get better at tracking, identifying and catching attackers, illustrated by two major crackdowns this year.

Kim Kardashian Earns $10K Per Tweet

foxcharlotte.com
By MIKE BRODY

(MYFOX NATIONAL) - Even though some people may not even consider her a celebrity, if you're judging by Twitter, Kim Kardashian is one of the biggest.

The Daily Mail reports that Kardashian earns a whopping $10,000 per tweet when she promotes companies. Kardashian, who has 2.7 million followers , earns the big bucks as part of her contract with in-stream advertising company Ad.ly, which helps celebrities make money off their Twitter accounts.

Usually the celebs are limited to one such commercial tweet per day.

Kardashian promotes Reebok and Carl's Jr., among other companies, and five of her last 30 tweets mention one of the companies.

An Advertising Age slideshow on online ad rates says there is a growing list of celebrities that "monetize" their tweets. Lauren Conrad and Dr. Drew have also enlisted the services of Ad.ly.

Kardashian recently sent a cease and desist letter to a doctor who created the "Cookie Diet" weight loss system. She is demanding the doctor take down a link on his company's Web site which suggests Kardashian uses the product.

Should You See Avatar? About 75 Percent Of People Who Tweet About It Think You Should

techcrunch.com

James Cameron’s visually-thrilling Avatar started out modestly for a mega-Hollywood sci-fi blockbuster, pulling in only $27 million its first day at the box office (compared to $72 million for Twilight Saga: New Moon and $68 million for Transformers). But Avatar is the “iPhone of Movies,” as Michael likes to call it (I think he’s seen it four times already, and that is just what he’ll admit to on Yammer). He is not the only one enamored with the movie, which is now nearing $400 million in worldwide box office ticket sales.

If people who are Tweeting about the movie are any judge, about 75 percent of people are saying good things about it, according to Twitter Sentiment (a site which analyzes the sentiment of Tweets). You see roughly the same numbers on TweetFeel and other sentiment analysis sites.

Twitter is the new word of mouth. Twitter Sentiment counts 111,092 positive recent Tweets with the word “avatar,” compared to 37,434 negative ones. That is a pretty large sample size, and seems to be a fairly good proxy for overall sentiment. Some of these could be Tweets about avatars in general, but if you look at the actual Tweets, they are nearly all about the movie right now. Some representative Tweets:

@steveborn1: Avatar kicked ass. Best movie I have seen this year

@roguepuppet: @katiekillian avatar is amazing. Catch it in 3d if you can

@JuLiWong: Okay i agree with everyone, AVATAR is good. AWESOME actually! :)

@tubamasterj: i love avatar. why cant we live in a simple, beautiful world like pandora

@UzumundyRussuto: Avatar is way better the second time!!

@wam3studios: Avatar kicked ass………. Despite the acting

140 characters is really all you need for a movie review.

Christmas tweets feature generational divide over Glenn Beck's influence

examiner.com

Despite his claims that he is not a "polarizing figure" Glenn Beck seems to have caused some conflict between the older and younger generations. Many of the Christmas tweets involving Beck featured younger people saying something like "Oh God why do my parents love Glenn Beck?" A sampling of some of these tweets included:

HKnight86: Nothing says Christmas like driving to Louisiana with Dad
listening to Glenn Beck Radio, and talking back to it. Merry
Christmas, everyone."

MongooseML: @LiveRandom Mmmhmmm. D: I want to burn that Glenn Beck
book my mom got. She won't shut up."

TheUndomestic: @saeedjones My dad likes Glenn Beck, and thinks
O'Reilly is too "moderate." What?"

nuccbko: grandpa just gave me glenn beck's book. dislike."

derrickriley: It's awesome when family quotes Glenn Beck. Thank you

Top Ten Tweets of 2009

politico.com

This was the year that politics got Twitterized.

As recently as two years ago, critics were lamenting that the television sound-bite had reduced politics into a meaningless microscopic mash. But sound bites are positively long-winded compared to tweets. Now, pols and pundits are learning to grab headlines in just 140 characters or fewer.

Needless to say, it has taken some getting used to. Increasingly. Short. Bursts. Dominated the scene. Spelling and punctuation were abandoned entirely. Grown men began typing things like “U R Gr8,” against Twitter’s light-blue backdrop and bubble logo.

It was the kind of year in which President Barack Obama could admit, “I have never used Twitter,” even though his feed, @BarackObama, had more than 2.9 million followers. All of whom, apparently, have been suckered into believing they are following the real Barack Obama.

For all its power as a global communications medium (remember the Iranian street protesters?), Twitter’s greatest contribution to the national discourse to date has been the ability of people to put their feet in their mouths at record speed. The only thing faster than an embarrassing tweet, apparently, is the apology for an embarrassing tweet.

But pols learn quickly, which means 2010 will probably be a much less interesting political year on Twitter. And that, in a way, is a shame.
........
1
Newt Gingrich

The former GOP speaker of the House got a little ahead of himself at 9:34 a.m. on May 27, when he declared that Supreme Court nominee Sonya Sotomayor was a “racist.”

“White man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. Latina woman racist should also withdraw,” Gingrich tweeted. He was incensed over Sotomayor’s comment about a “wise Latina” being able to make a better decision than a white male because of her life experience.
.........

2
Terry Moran

It turns out that the happy chatter between the president and television correspondents before an interview begins is supposed to be off the record. Who knew? Not Terry Moran, the ABC Nightline co-anchor — and former White House correspondent — who tweeted his observations about some warm-up chatter between CNBC’s John Harwood and Obama in September.

"Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a 'jackass' for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT'S presidential," Moran tweeted.
.........

3
Sarah Palin*

Sarah Palin’s Aug. 7 statement that her Down syndrome baby could have to stand before an Obama death panel set off an intense firestorm of controversy. Some screamed that Palin was wildly distorting the facts. Others shouted that they wanted Palin to run for president. Either way, the volume was up, and the person people were talking about was Palin. Who, incidentally, had a book to sell.

Here’s the meat of Palin’s post on Facebook: “The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama's 'death panel' so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their 'level of productivity in society,' whether they are worthy of health care.”
.........

4
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa)

Apparently, the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee didn’t like it when Obama decided to do a little sightseeing in Paris while Grassley was left in D.C., slaving over the health care bill.

Grassley took to his Twitter feed to deliver this 140-character broadside:

“Pres Obama while u sightseeing in Paris u said ‘time to delivr on healthcare’ When you are a 'hammer' u think evrything is NAIL I’m no NAIL”
.........

5
The White House

In the old days, when theWhite House wanted to call a press conference, the press secretary strode into the briefing room and gathered up the press corps. But now there is Twitter.

And so the White House made history of a sort when it broke the first official administration news on Twitter at 1:25 p.m. on July 17: “You heard it here first: Primetime presidential news conference at the White House, Wed. 7/22 @ 9PM EDT.”

That the news was fed to Twitter using Tweetie, a Twitter app for the iPhone, just gave the moment all the more high-tech luster.
.........

6
Jake Tapper

The ABC News White House Correspondent, who has pecked perhaps the most characters of any media Tweeter on Twitter, got into something of an ethical conundrum in March, when he was first to tweet the news about Obama’s gaffe about the Special Olympics during an interview with Jay Leno.

“Breaking- PrezObama on Leno jokes about being a bad bowler- says it's "like the Special Olympics or something" Tapper first Tweeted. “Preparing for day of hypocrisy: conservs who would normally defend the SpecOlymp joke acting offended, liberals saying lighten up. Sigh”

When TPM Muckraker’s David Kurtz said he didn’t like the Tapper Tweets, Tapper blocked Kurtz from his feed. That set off a minor Internet kerfuffle, at the end of which Tapper had unblocked Kurtz and a key piece of Twitter etiquette had been established. Don’t block your critics, even if they’re annoying.

“I’m trying to use Twitter as a way to communicate with all sorts of people from all over the political spectrum, as a place for feedback, polite argument, and dialogue,” Tapper explained in a statement at the time.
..........

7
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.)

The post itself was unremarkable, but Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) gave it an unforgettable moniker: “The smoking tweet.”
.........

8
George Stephanopoulos

On March 17, ABC’s George Stephanopoulos (who was still only the host of "This Week" and not yet of "Good Morning America") conducted what might be the world’s first political Twitterview, an interview with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) conducted entirely on Twitter.
.........

9
Andrew Breitbart

The conservative commentator’s first instinct on hearing of the death of Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) was to take to his Twitter feed and unleash a torrent of invective.

“Rest in Chappaquiddick,” Breitbart wrote at 10:42 p.m. on Aug. 25. But he wasn’t done. Breitbart went on to call Kennedy “a special pile of human excrement.”

Despite some criticism, Breitbart was unapologetic. After POLITICO’s Michael Calderone posted a story noting “Not all Kennedy critics hold fire,” Breitbart tweeted again on Aug. 26: “Boy, POLITICO missed my best ones!”
.........

10
Iranian protesters

“It was a nightmare, I can barely breath & my face is burning, Masood got shot in the arm & Shayan's brother is missing,” wrote a Twitter user calling himself Iranian Student on the Twitter feed Change_for_Iran on June 20. That and thousands of other tweets from Iranians frustrated with the country’s disputed election that month showed Twitter’s potential. Even as they were coordinating marches and fearing for their lives, the protesters made sure to provide regular updates to the world.

“This event has been Twitter’s finest hour,” wrote the blogger Andrew Sullivan.

And no one apologized for that at all.

Google Voice returning to the iPhone via the browser

Having your application pulled from the Apple iTunes App Store can’t keep a good developer down, just ask Riverturn.

Many people lamented when the Google Voice service was banned from the iPhone app store, especially the developers of applications who got caught in the dust up between Google and Apple. It’s been several months now since the skirmish, and while the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is still looking into what exactly happened, Riverturn is returning its VoiceCentral app to the iPhone, it’s just via the browser this time.

People who miss the ease of the VoiceCentral application will be happy to learn that there is now a mobile Web version of the tool in private beta according to The Washing Post. The new version exists completely on the Web, so it is totally outside of the control of Apple. This also means that if Riverturn should ever charge for access, Apple will receive no revenue.

According to the report, the new version of the app will allow you to do everything the old one could do except for accessing your Google Voice Contacts. You can still read transcribed messages, texting and, of course, making calls. The new way the call features work is to call your iPhone at the same time it is calling the party you are attempting to contact. This will still use your minutes on your phone, but at least you will be able to go through Google Voice if you so choose.

Brands Begin to Embrace Online Video Ads

Brands Begin to Embrace Online Video Ads
The potential to reach consumers with more creative and less expensive advertisements has brands exploring viral marketing.
(nacsonline)

NORCROSS, Ga. – While television audiences will not see Pretzelmaker’s newest music video, online viewers can groove to the four-minute ad made by a 16-year-old amateur artist, Nation’s Restaurant News reports. The video advertises the chain’s “4 Buck Hook Up” promotion on the Pretzelmaker’s Web site and YouTube.

More and more businesses are turning to online messages to create buzz about promotions and products for a fraction of the cost of traditional advertising. “TV doesn’t really give us the best return on investment…Pretzelmaker is more of an impulse purchase; it’s not like you saw it on TV and decided to go get one,” said Jenn Johnston, senior vice president of brand marketing for NexCen Franchise Management, parent of Pretzelmaker.

With YouTube accounting for up to 10 percent of all Internet traffic, online videos are a good return on investment. For companies like Pretzelmaker, the ability to spread its message inexpensively was worth exploring.

The online video “was a minimal expense on our part and a way to engage teens that allows them to have their own conversations about it,” said Johnston. “If it came from the musician himself, it would seem less promotional and more like something they’d get excited about.”

Asia leads as global beer consumption grows 1.2%

Tues 22nd December

TOKYO

Global beer consumption grew 1.2% in 2008 from the preceding year to 178.06 million kiloliters, breaking the record for the 23rd straight year, Kirin Holdings Co said Monday. The number is equivalent to 144 times the cubic volume of the Tokyo Dome baseball stadium, according to the Kirin Institute of Food & Lifestyle, a Kirin Holdings research arm that annually compiles relevant data.

By region, Asia became the world’s biggest beer-consuming area for the first time with 56.43 million kl, up 3%, overtaking the Europeans who drank 54.85 million kl, down 0.8%. China, which accounted for a 40.82 million-kl portion of the Asian consumption, took the top slot on the world’s beer-drinking countries’ ranking list for the sixth consecutive year. Japan was Asia’s second-largest beer consumer with 6.11 million kl.

Chrome: The new colour of OS

by; Ajai Sreevatsan

CHENNAI: There is a new kid in the Operating System (OS) block. The source code of Chromium OS, the open source project behind Google Chrome OS, was released a couple of weeks ago and, according to the official Google blog, netbooks preloaded with the finished OS will be available by late 2010.

It will support both x86 (Intel) as well as ARM chips and, from the looks of the early release, the interface will sport a Spartan aesthetic – similar to Google’s browser.

Google is consulting a variety of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to design machines with “specific reference hardware.” This will skip a lot of the hardware checking steps that standard operating systems run through. In some of the test runs, the OS booted up in under seven seconds. The platform is based on a Linux kernel which will self-check and self-update at every boot.

But what does all the guesswork about the final technical specifications and the anticipated use of emerging technologies such as HTML 5 really mean to you?

Obama calls for $200B for jobs

Obama calls for $200B for jobs

by cbc.ca
canadian press

U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday proposed increased stimulus spending aimed at U.S. job creation.

He asked Congress to approve a three-part program, much of it aimed at small business.

Obama said staggering job losses mean the country must continue to "spend our way out of this recession" with a round of new incentives. The U.S. unemployment rate is 10 per cent.

His program includes a one-year elimination of capital gains taxes, deductions for up to $250,000 in investment and increased deductions for capital spending, all aimed at small firms. The program would also provide tax incentives for firms that create jobs and easier terms for borrowing.

Obama also called for increased spending on roads, bridges, and other infrastructure and incentives for homeowners who retrofit their properties to use clean energy or become more energy efficient.

Samsung Launches Bada Smartphone Platform

Samsung Launches Bada Smartphone Platform

By Gustav Sandstrom
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. (005930.SE), the world's second-largest handset maker by shipments, Tuesday launched its new smartphone platform, named bada, as the focus of the cellphone industry increasingly shifts to software.

Bada, which means ocean in Korean, includes a support platform for software developers, as the company aims to catch up with rival systems that offer an easy to use and feature-packed interface for applications such as games, the Internet, location-based services and music.

Driven by the success of Apple Inc's (AAPL) iPhone and its App Store, phone makers and wireless operators have started to push their service offerings hard.

Samsung's bada includes motion sensing, face detection, social networking and other interactive features, and its launch coincides with a challenge by the company to developers to win a share of a $2.7 million prize fund by using bada's features to build applications.

Development partners for bada include Twitter and games companies EA Mobile, a unit of Electronic Arts Inc. (ERTS), and France's Gameloft (GFT.FR).

The platform provides an opportunity for developers "to get their applications onto an unprecedented number of Samsung devices across the world," said Hosoo Lee, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Media Solution Center.

Samsung will initially launch bada-based touch screen phones for the mid-range segment and thereafter on lower-end devices, Hosoo Lee told Dow Jones Newswires Tuesday.

He said bada phones will mainly be released in Asia and Europe in the first half of 2010, followed by other markets later, but Samsung had yet to determine a more detailed roadmap or set of targets.

The company will gradually expand the number of bada handsets but will also continue to use other platforms such as Microsoft Corp's (MSFT) Windows Mobile, Google Inc's (GOOG) Android and Symbian, said Lee, adding that the company still hasn't decided whether it will open up bada to other mobile phone manufacturers and operators.

McDonald’s Sales Trail Estimates as Asia Results Drop – Bloomberg

McDonald’s Sales Trail Estimates as Asia Results Drop – Bloomberg

By Courtney Dentch

Dec. 8 (Bloomberg) -- McDonald’s Corp. fell the most in more than four months after global November sales showed the smallest monthly gain in at least five years, missing analysts’ estimates.

McDonald’s fell $1.66, or 2.7 percent, to $60.27 at 9:51 a.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. Earlier it slipped as much as 3.1 percent, the biggest intraday drop since July 23. It had lost less than 1 percent this year before today.

Sales at global stores open at least 13 months rose 0.7 percent. U.S. sales declined 0.6 percent, while Europe climbed 2.5 percent, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company said in a statement today. Sales in Asia, the Middle East and Africa fell 1 percent.

It was the second straight month of declines in U.S. sales as consumers curbed spending and as high unemployment rates trimmed sales at breakfast and lunch. Orders off the company’s dollar menu have been hurt by rivals’ offers, such as Burger King Holdings Inc.’s $1 double cheeseburger. The Asia region posted its first decline since August as Japan and China sales slowed.

How To Create the Perfect Facebook Fan Page » Techipedia | Tamar Weinberg

How To Create the Perfect Facebook Fan Page »
by Techipedia | Tamar Weinberg

This is a guest post by Jesse Stay, founder and CEO of SocialToo.com and all around great Facebook Fan Page coder. He’s volunteered to give away a copy of his recent book, FBML Essentials, to two readers. Scroll down to the end of the post for details on how to win.

Marketers love Facebook. With 350 million+ users, a self-promoting and natural way to have people promote your product, and a very active audience full of close friends and family, what’s not to like? If you had any doubt, just go on over to their stats page and see for yourself why it is something you want as part of your marketing strategy.

The best place you can place your brand on Facebook is through a Facebook Page (that’s with a capital “P”, not to be confused with your personal Profile). As of the time of this writing, over 10 million users become fans of Fan Pages every day. This number should be no surprise — when people “fan” your Page, their friends see it, and your brand spreads organically. What most don’t know is that you can customize this experience for your users. With just a little work, and either some knowledge of simple HTML or the ability to hire a developer to do the work for you, you can have a custom Page up for your business in no time. Here are some tips you can apply to your Facebook marketing strategy that will put your Facebook Page leaps and bounds ahead of the competition:

Rocking With Facebook | The Big Money

Rocking With Facebook | The Big Money

Small businesses, too, can use social media to their advantage.
Posted Tuesday, December 1, 2009 - 10:08am

The live-music business in a college town like Missoula, Mont., is not nearly as easy as it looks. Sure, there’s a ready pool of patrons for good music and drinking and dancing, but they don’t have much money, and there’s a lot of competition for the evening entertainment dollar. As a result, several mainstays of the Missoula local music scene have gone out of business in recent years.

The Badlander, a two-year-old bar and live music venue that occupies one of the better club spaces in downtown Missoula, seems destined to avoid that fate. Owned by four youthful partners, the club features multiple stages and a lot of clever ideas on how to bring people in the door. And one of its not-so-secret weapons is Facebook.

Colin Hickey, the booking agent and the man responsible for its Facebook strategy, says the Badlander has about 3,000 fans on Facebook. A companion venue that’s part of the same club, The Palace, has about 1,600.

The most obvious use of the Facebook page is to get the word out about upcoming shows. Hickey does one posting a day on Facebook about what’s happening that night, but he keeps a tight limit on formal “invitations.”

“We decided early on that we didn’t want to bombard people with event invitations,” says Hickey. “As Facebook users ourselves, we know that can be very annoying. We have about 20 shows a month, and you don’t want to send 20 invitations a month or people will start to hide from you.”

Instead, he relies on the basic “status update” for the daily post, and uses invitations just two or three times a month when a show needs an extra push—or when he’s trying to get a sense of how many people to expect. ... (more)
